Truck breakdown at night: call roadside assistance immediately or wait until morning?
Determine whether the truck can safely remain where it is until morning or whether assistance is needed during the night. Assess where the truck has stopped and the nature of the breakdown, the cost of downtime, the urgency of the trip and the sensitivity of the cargo. Contact the roadside assistance dispatcher during the night to check what service is available, what the ETA is and what call-out terms apply. Compare these with the option of waiting until morning.
1. Determine whether you can wait until morning
The decision to delay assistance depends on where and how the truck is positioned, whether it is safe to wait and whether the truck can be accessed. If the truck is on a motorway carriageway or a narrow hard shoulder, is difficult to see, access is restricted, or waiting creates a risk to the driver, passengers or cargo, do not delay contacting roadside assistance. Agree on the next safe step with the dispatcher. In all other cases, compare the terms of a night-time call-out with the consequences of waiting until morning.
2. If you cannot wait until morning
Provide details of the commercial vehicle weighing over 7.5 tonnes so the roadside assistance dispatcher can determine the appropriate course of action and whether a night-time call-out is possible. Do not diagnose the cause of the breakdown or decide what repair is needed yourself.
Provide the dispatcher with:
- the exact location;
- the vehicle type and vehicle combination;
- the registration numbers;
- the driver's contact details;
- the contact details of the responsible company representative if the driver is not the decision-maker;
- the observed signs of the breakdown;
- any access restrictions;
- photos or videos, if they can be taken safely;
- information on whether the police or Autobahnmeisterei are already involved.
The remaining information depends on the nature of the problem. For tyre damage, specify the axle and side and, if twin tyres are fitted, state which wheel is damaged. Also provide the fitted tyre size and the condition of the rim. State whether the vehicle has a spare wheel, what condition it is in and where it is stored.
For a technical fault, provide the observed symptoms, fault messages or dashboard indicators, whether the engine starts, whether the vehicle can move under its own power, and what preceded the breakdown.
If towing is likely to be required, confirm the vehicle's load status and whether it can be manoeuvred. Also state whether the entire vehicle combination needs to be moved and where it should be taken.
3. If you can wait until morning
Contact roadside assistance during the night, have the breakdown case logged and ask them to check the first available morning call-out. Do not rely on assistance being available in the morning without confirmation: the availability of a service partner, the required tyre, the necessary equipment or a workshop may change.
Confirm when you will receive the call-out confirmation or an ETA update. If the truck’s position, access to the vehicle, the vehicle’s condition or the circumstances of the trip change before morning, inform the dispatcher immediately. If the morning call-out has not been confirmed or the risks to the trip have increased, reconsider the decision to delay assistance.
4. How to pay for services at night
At night, payment can be made via a payment link using a bank or corporate card, through Apple Pay or Google Pay, by bank transfer or with a DKV corporate card. For German legal entities, payment by invoice or from a deposit may also be available after a credit check.
Avoid three mistakes
- Do not treat sending the details or making payment as confirmation of the call-out. Confirm that the case is being handled and obtain the current ETA; otherwise, the trip schedule will be based on an unconfirmed ETA.
- Do not leave cost approval to the driver. The driver provides information from the location, while the price, payment method and any additional work are approved by the transport company’s dispatcher or another responsible company representative.
- Do not treat the fact that the vehicle can move as confirmation that the trip can continue. The fact that the engine starts or the vehicle can move does not replace an on-site technical assessment by the service partner.
MT onroad handles breakdown requests for commercial vehicles in Germany and Austria around the clock by phone on +49 977 5376 9999. Provide the dispatcher with the location, vehicle details and a description of the situation so the breakdown case can be logged and the next steps agreed. Compare the available terms and decide whether to arrange a night-time call-out or postpone assistance until morning.
FAQ
How do you compare the cost of a night-time call-out with waiting until morning?
Consider the cost of downtime, delivery deadlines, the urgency of the trip, the sensitivity of the cargo and the impact of the delay on the next trip. Compare these consequences with the cost of a night-time call-out and the expected arrival time of the service team, rather than looking only at the difference between daytime and night-time rates.
